How to Have a Chiropractic Lifestyle

The nerves that come from the spine go to virtually all the cells, tissues, and organs in the body. Although chiropractic is not a cure-all for every health problem, nerve interference from subluxation potentially can affect any tissue in the body, leading to health problems in that area. Whether the health problem is acid reflux, problems with proper elimination, or overly sensitive sinuses that are subject to infection and allergic response, when the nerves to these target tissues are free of subluxation, the tissues become healthier. In most cases, the healing process follows a logical sequence. Once the subluxation is corrected, the local tissues near the spine begin to heal first. Then the nerves begin to heal, and then the target organs fed by those nerves can begin to regain their health.

However, just as the process of disease usually takes time to gain momentum, the process of returning to health takes time as well. That is because true health comes from the body repairing and replacing tissues and cells, and this process must take place over time.

For problems that are distant from the spine, or for target tissue ailments, the course of care may be similar to that of a person suffering from back pain: an initial course of relief care, followed by reconstructive and then maintenance care. The amount of time that it takes to feel better will be determined by the patient's age and the amount of tissue damage sustained before care begins. Some people have unexpectedly quick relief from their health problems; others will take longer to heal.

Chiropractic care isn't a quick fix, although it can eliminate pain fairly quickly. Ideally it should be a lifestyle choice, in the same way you choose to eat a healthy diet or exercise. We liken chiropractic care to sessions with a physical trainer. When you start exercising under the guidance of a physical trainer you need to work with him or her several times a week so you can set patterns for proper physiological function. Once you have those patterns in place, then you can check in with your trainer once a month or once a quarter to get a new set of exercises based on your current level of functioning. But when you get to a certain level of physical performance, does that mean you don't have to exercise the rest of your life? No. If you eat well for a few months, does that mean you can eat whatever you like for the rest of your life and it doesn't matter? No. You have to continue exercising and eating well if you want to be healthy. And chiropractic care is just as vital a part of a healthy lifestyle as exercise and nutrition. In the same way you need to take care of your muscular and circulatory system through regular exercise, and your digestive system through proper nutritional habits, you need to take care of your system through regular chiropractic care.
